Common errors messages and what they mean

You may occasionally see various error messages when detach/reattaching emails. Look it up here and see what is really happening.

Outlook says "Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments"
Cause: The latest update from Outlook 2007 and 2010 treats ByReference attachments as unsafe. ByReference attachments are what we use to physically detach your attachments, yet still allow you to access them through a mouse click. See the security update, and the solutions.

Error message: "The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel".
Cause: You will see this error if your bucket name has a . (period) in it and when you do a detach to S3. When you have . in the name, S3 treats it as a subdomain. Unfortunately, the SSL certificate Amazon uses is not valid for the subdomain. Remove . from your bucket name should fix the problem.

Error message: "The system cannot find the file specified".
Cause: This error may happen when you click on an attachment to view. You may have changed the local cache directory path. We will cache the attachment in the new directory, but Outlook does not update the path when the message is selected. Go select a different message, then come back to the original message, and you should be able to see the attachment.

Error message: "Can't create file : xxxxxx. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click properties on the shortcut".
Cause: This error arises because your Internet temporary buffer has too many files with the same name. image001.jpg is a common file name, you will likely see it reporting error first. To fix the problem, go to your Internet temporary directory and delete all files that start with the same name.

The path to this directory is stored in your registry. If you use Outlook 2003, it is at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security\OutlookSecureTempFolder. By default, it is something like C:\Documents and Settings\%USER_NAME%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK#\

Error message: "Internal error" or "time out".
Cause: Amazon S3 occasionally reports internal error or timeout. This is normal. Just retry and the problem will go away.

Error message: "Microsoft Office Outlook could not sign or encrypt this message because you have no certificates which can be used to send from the email address....".
Cause: After detaching/reattaching, we must save the changes made. If the email is signed with a certificate, Outlook will prompt you with the error message indicating that you cannot change it. Either get a digital ID as prompted by the error message, or just ignore the message. If you ignore, Outlook will revert back the changes we made to the email.
